The messy middle
Recently I’ve been thinking about making some changes in my own business.
Not because anything is wrong.
In fact, things are going well.
But like many business owners, there comes a point where you start asking yourself:
- Where do I really want to spend my time?
- Which services bring me the most enjoyment?
- Which clients are the best fit?
- What do I want my business to look like in a year’s time?
They’re exciting questions.
They’re also uncomfortable ones.
Because the answers often involve change.
Creating space means letting go
One of the hardest lessons in business is accepting that you can’t keep adding forever.
Every new service.
Every new client.
Every new opportunity.
They all take time.
Eventually something has to give.
Sometimes recognising that enough is enough is exactly what allows your business to move forward.
Sometimes that means reducing a service you’ve always offered.
Sometimes it means increasing your prices.
Sometimes it means saying goodbye to work that no longer fits the business you’re trying to build.
From the outside, it can look like you’re going backwards.
In reality, you’re making room for something better.
Dirty before beautiful
When you pressure wash a patio, the first thing you notice isn’t how clean it looks.
It’s how dirty the water becomes.
Mud spreads everywhere.
The surface looks patchy.
For a while, it actually looks worse than when you started.
But you trust the process because you know what’s underneath.
Business works in exactly the same way.
There are periods where you’re reorganising systems, changing services, updating your website or refining your client base.
Sometimes the best progress comes not from doing more, but from knowing what to stop doing.
From the outside, it can feel untidy.
You may even wonder whether you’ve made the right decision.
But often you’re simply in the cleaning stage.
Building the business you actually want
As business owners, we’re often encouraged to chase every opportunity.
But I’ve realised I’d rather build a business that fits my life than a life that has to fit around my business. Listening to your body in self-employment has taught me that success isn’t about squeezing more into every week—it’s about creating a business that’s sustainable.
That means thinking about the future rather than simply reacting to today. Planning for your needs is important, especially if you want to build a business that’s sustainable over the long term.
That means thinking about:
- how many client hours I want to work each week
- how much time I need for admin and marketing
- what capacity I realistically have
- which services create the biggest impact
- where I genuinely enjoy spending my time
These aren’t glamorous decisions.
But they’re the ones that shape a sustainable business.
Trust the process
If your business feels a little messy right now, don’t assume you’re doing something wrong.
Sometimes you’re simply clearing away what no longer belongs.
Sometimes you’re making space for better opportunities.
Sometimes things have to turn dirty before they become beautiful.
And when the cleaning is finished, you’ll often wonder why you didn’t start sooner.
